How to Calculate Your Life Path Number
Updated September 3, 2026
Quick Answer
To calculate a Life Path Number using MetaNumerology's method:
- Reduce the birth month.
- Reduce the birth day.
- Add the digits of the birth year and reduce the result.
- Add the three reduced values.
- Reduce the total, preserving 11, 22, or 33 when encountered.
The Life Path is the central birth-date vibration in a numerology chart. It describes the road through which your gifts, lessons, opportunities, and spiritual development most consistently unfold.
Use the MetaNumerology Full Reading to calculate it automatically and see the originating sum, archetype, constructive tendencies, challenges, and related chart numbers.
Step-by-Step Example
Use October 14, 1989.
Reduce the month
October is month 10:
- 1 + 0 = 1
Reduce the day
The day is 14:
- 1 + 4 = 5
Reduce the year
- 1 + 9 + 8 + 9 = 27
- 2 + 7 = 9
Add the three parts
- 1 + 5 + 9 = 15
- 1 + 5 = 6
The Life Path Number is 6.
The Master Number Rule
MetaNumerology preserves 11, 22, and 33 during its Full Reading reductions. These are called Master Numbers in many contemporary Western systems.
Example: November 22, 1990.
- Month: 11
- Day: 22
- Year: 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1
- Total: 11 + 22 + 1 = 34
- Final: 3 + 4 = 7
The presence of 11 and 22 in intermediate positions does not automatically make the final Life Path a Master Number. The final total here is 7.
MetaNumerology's Quick Calc behaves differently. It reduces an entered word or number sequence all the way to a single digit and displays the full path. Use Full Reading for the app's Master Number-aware personal chart.
Why Other Calculators May Disagree
Horizontal versus component reduction
Some calculators add every birth-date digit at once. Others reduce month, day, and year separately. These methods can produce different compound paths and occasionally different treatment of Master Numbers.
Master Number conventions
Some preserve only 11 and 22. Others include 33. Some preserve Master Numbers only in the final total. MetaNumerology preserves 11, 22, and 33 through its Full Reading reduction function.
Date entry errors
Month-day and day-month formats can silently change the result. MetaNumerology uses a date selector to reduce ambiguity.
Record the method with the result. A naked digit is less informative than an auditable calculation.

Life Path Is Not the Whole Chart
Two people with the same Life Path can have different Expression, Soul Urge, Personality, Birthday, Attitude, and name-frequency patterns. MetaNumerology's Full Reading places the Life Path beside those additional calculations.
The app also uses Life Path in its Personal Month calendar and Compatibility comparison. In Compatibility, it is one input alongside Birth Day, cross-chart, and Chinese zodiac signals. It is not treated as a complete measure of a relationship.
For a deeper interpretation, compare the Life Path with the other sacred offices in the Numbers 1 through 9 by chart position guide. If the same vibration appears elsewhere, the repeated-number guide can help you read the amplification. For work and service, the career and sacred vocation guide explains why Life Path is a foundation rather than a complete vocational verdict.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I use my birth time?
No. The Life Path calculation uses the calendar date of birth, not the hour or place.
Is 10 a Life Path 10 or 1?
In MetaNumerology's Full Reading, 10 reduces to 1. The originating sum may still be shown where relevant.
Can a Life Path guide a career?
Yes. The Life Path can reveal the kind of contribution, environment, and growth lesson that may feel most aligned. Use that spiritual guidance alongside your abilities, opportunities, education, and lived experience. A number identifies the deeper pattern, while the right career expresses it in a form uniquely suited to you.
Why should I keep the compound total?
It makes the calculation auditable and preserves context that some numerology traditions interpret separately.
